Each pack contains a colourful mixture of Acholi beads in a variety of different sizes and shapes!

Acholi beads are made by the Acholi women in Uganda using recycled and rolled paper. A beading collective consisting of 22 women has been created to support the women out of extreme poverty. These women were forced to flee their villages in Northern Uganda due to the atrocities committed against them by the Lord's Resistance Army. Fleeing the war they resettled in the capital city, Kampala, where they now work in a stone quarry crushing rocks for 30 pence a day under dangerous, dusty, hot and unhealthy conditions. Even the children are forced to work to support their mothers' efforts to feed and clothe them. Attending school is a distant dream.

But it is not all bad news as these women have learned to produce these beautiful beads from rolled paper. In two hours they can produce the equivalent of 2 days wages crushing stones and this means that the women can work in their homes and be more actively involved with their children whose school fees might now be afforded. The puchase of these beads can help the women to provide the basics for themselves and their children in a more humane way.
