FAQ – How long do I need to cut my threads?

Answer – As a general rule of thumb with Kumihimo you should cut your threads 3 times longer than you want your finished piece to be e.g. if you want your fnished necklace to be 20 inches or 50cm you should cut your threads 60inches or 1.5 meters long. That way you’ll definitely have enough thread and won’t have too much wastage either.

Method

1. Cut the Superlon cord into 8 equal 1.5 meter lengths andtie all 8 together in a knot on one end.

2. Now set up your Kumihimo disk with the 8 warpbraid using the instructions included with your disk.

3. Next you’ll need to thread the beads onto eachcord in the pattern shown below and roll up each length into aBob-eez-No-Tangle Bobbin to stop the cords from tangling and the beads fromdropping off.

4. Thread the beads in your chosen pattern (see example diagrams at the bottom of this page)

5. Now weight the centre knot down with a Kumihimo weight. This will keep the tension in the braid.

6. Start off by doing a few turns of the boardusing the 8 warp technique illustrated in the instructions included with yourdisk – do not add any beads at this stage.

7. Once your braid is about 1cm long you’re readyto start adding beads

8. Simply add one bead every time you pass a thread across the board, making sure that the bead you drop is caught underneath the thread that is running directly across it.

9. Continue until all the beads have run out and then carry on with the thread until you have approx. 1cm of braid without any beads on it.

10. Now add some glue to either end of your braid sothat it will not undo when you remove it from the disc. Allow the glue to dryand then remove the braid from your disk and snip off the ends.

11. Finally glue the ends of your braid into themagnetic clasp using Zap Gel. We recommend that you separate the two ends ofthe clasp until the glue is dry just in case any glue seeps through to themagnets and glues your clasp together!

Disk Set Up Instructions for each necklace – These are our suggested set ups and our suggested number of beads per strand, if you braid very tightly you may need to use more beads. Mix it up and make up your own patterns, we’d love to see your designs!
