Method

Note: If this is the first time you have made a tiara you should allow yourself around 3 hours to complete the project (don’t worry, you’ll get faster with practice!), you may also wish to purchase the Tiara book by Hana Glover which has lots of helpful photographs for beginners, or pop along to one of our tiara workshops held at the Spoilt Rotten Bead Shop!

1. Begin by attaching your wire to the tiara base – take a one meter length of 0.4mm silver plated wire and grip 5mm to the inside of the tiara base about 2 inches from the end of the base, keep gripping the 5mm length against the base and wrap the rest of the wire around the tiara base towards the center of the base so that you trap the 5mm length as you wrap the wire around the base.

2. You are now ready to start making the stalks on the tiara – thread a 4mm Swarovski Crystal onto the wire that you have attached to the tiara base and hold the crystal about 2 inches from the tiara base, bend the wire back down the side of the bead towards the tiara base. Grip the crystal and twist the wire so that it forms a stalk –  you’ll find your twisting will get neater with practice.

3. Wrap the end of the wire around the base once to secure the stalk and then you are ready to add the next stalk to the tiara, continue adding stalks in different lengths and with different coloured crystals and pearls on them. Every once in a while create little “flowers” by threading three or five beads onto the wire and then twisting the wire back down to the base. If you run out of wire then simply cut another length and attach it to the base in the same way.

4. Once you have attached all the stalks you would like onto your tiara base you are ready to wrap the base in crystals (this is a great way to cover up any mistakes or joins in the wire!). To wrap the base of the tiara take a 1 meter length of wire and attach it to the base, thread a 4mm Crystal AB bead onto the wire and hold the bead against the base while you wrap the wire around the base, add another bead and continue until you have wrapped the entire base in crystals.
