How to Open and Close a Jump Ring

Learning how to correctly open and close a jump ring is an essential jewellery making skill.

Once you get the hang of it you’ll find it very easy, the trick is to have two pairs of good quality Chain Nose Pliers. Grip the jump ring either side of the opening and gently twist the jump ring to open it – never pull a jump ring apart to open it as this will distort the circle and make the ring impossible to close.

To close a jump ring you simply grip the ring with your Chain Nose Pliers either side of the opening and once again twist it closed whilst applying gentle pressure to push the sides of the ring together – as the ring closes you’ll hear a little “click” sound as the two sides of the ring meet.
